Some 1,500 charities and companies will take part in the third annual #givingtuesday event in the UK today.

CAF co-ordinates the activity around #givingtuesday in the UK, encouraging people to donate to charity shortly after the discount shopping campaigns around Black Friday. It began in US and came to the UK in 2014.

More than 1,500 organisations are taking part in activity this year including Morrisons, Sainsbury’s, the Financial Times, London Zoo, Sue Ryder, Cancer Research UK, RSPCA and BT.

New activity for this year’s includes all post delivered by Royal Mail incorporating a #givingtuesday postmark, a Sky television advert and an cross-party choir of MPs who will sing carols outside Parliament this lunchtime.

Last year around 1,400 organisations took part and CAF said that online donations raised £6,000 a minute for UK charities.

Acts of kindness

This year it has commissioned research from YouGov to show how people are generous throughout the year. In October YouGov asked 1,000 people about acts of kindness for strangers.

Acts of kindness people in the UK have done for a stranger in past 12 months include:

  1. Held the door open (76 per cent)
  2. Stopped to give someone directions (50 per cent)
  3. Let someone in front in a shopping queue (48 per cent)
  4. Given a compliment (35 per cent)
  5. Given up a seat on public transport (32 per cent)
  6. Passed on a ‘pay and display’ parking ticket (21 per cent)
  7. Helped someone carry a pram or pushchair (16 per cent)
  8. Help carry someone’s shopping (14 per cent)
  9. Given food (13 per cent)
  10. Stopped to talk to someone in distress (13 per cent)
