With the changes to the public benefit rules a debate was needed to explore how the law might be interpreted in the light of modern conditions.

Facilitating this debate was the aim of the Charity Law Association’s For the Public Benefit conference which, on 2 May 2007, brought together over 300 charity lawyers, charities, academics and policymakers. Much of the day’s work was done in 13 specialist groups – one for each of the new descriptions or categories of charities under the Act.

The essays in this volume are written by the teams that led the 13 groups to explain, so far as that is possible, the extent of the current law and its limitations and challenges.
