Sir Mark Walport

Sir Mark Walport was appointed director of the Wellcome Trust in 2003. Prior to this he was professor of medicine and head of the division of medicine at Imperial College London. He is a member of several government bodies including the Prime Minister’s Council for Science and Technology, and the UK India Round Table.
 
He has also undertaken independent reviews for the UK Government on the use and sharing of personal information in the public and private sectors, 'Data Sharing Review' (2009) and secondary education, 'Science and Mathematics: Secondary Education for the 21st Century' (2010).

In 2009 he received a knighthood in the New Year’s Honour’s List for his services to medical research.

Wellcome Trust launches £200m investment business

Medical research charity the Wellcome Trust is to invest £200m in a new business that will provide funding for emerging healthcare companies and technologies.

Sir Mark Walport, director of the Wellcome Trust, has been moved to defend the charity’s recent investment in the online lender Wonga after being tackled about it by Labour MP Stella Creasy.

The Wellcome Trust has teamed up with pharmaceutical giant

Merck to create a joint-venture vaccine research organisation, in the first known pharma-charity partnership. The new Hilleman Laboratories has been guaranteed £90m in equal parts from the Wellcome Trust and Merck over a five-year period.
