The 2018 Virgin London Marathon raised a record £63.7m for charity – an increase of £2m on last year –the event announced today.

It is the 12th consecutive year that the event has set the world record for the amount raised on a single day. Since the marathon launched in 1981 it has raised £955m.

Jo Barnett, executive director at Virgin Money Giving, said: "Once again the generosity of the public around the Virgin Money London Marathon is truly astounding and we are delighted to be able to play our part in raising money for so many worthwhile causes."

The top fundraising charity for the year was Children with Cancer, which raised over £3m.

Emily Roff, senior sports events manager at Children with Cancer, said: “We are delighted to have raised such an incredible amount to fund vital specialist research to help save the life of every child with cancer and keep their family together. We’d like to say a huge thank you to London Marathon Events as well as all of our dedicated runners.”

The 2019 London Marathon will take place on 28 April and this year the event is supporting the Dementia Revolution campaign from Alzheimer’s Society and Alzheimer’s Research UK as its main charity partner.

Earlier this year charities criticised event organisers after it was revealed that advertising packages to guarantee places in the event would cost up to £22,000, while a scheme that offers a limited number of cheaper charity places has been closed to new participants for several years.
