Cancer Research UK is piloting a scheme to ensure most of the office desks in its IT department are in use even when many personnel are working off-site.
Condeco, a new desk-booking module provided by RNM Systems, enables the charity’s central London information systems department to manage its office space with greater efficiency, and have as many of its 140 desks in use at any one time by its 200 staff.
The programme requires employees to declare when they will be out at meetings, holidays or conferences, and subsequently desks on the computerised booking pool flash green to alert other staff that they are free.
Jane Swindle, IS business change manager at CRUK, said: "Previously it was the job of the poor PA to play scrabble for the desks.
"Condeco has the potential to allow us to raise office utilisation, reduce our energy bill, reduce our carbon footprint and, in the process, make real estate savings."
The system is hosted in-house, on CRUK’s own servers, but can be accessed remotely by staff.

The charity refused to say how much the system cost
