Homelessness charity Depaul UK has launched a new version of its awareness-raising iHobo app for smartphones which introduces new social networking features to the game.
Despite initial criticism, the original version of the app reached number one in the free download chart after its launch last May and has since been downloaded more than 600,000 times.
The new 1.1 version is linked to Facebook Connect, enabling users to share their progress and start conversations more easily. Users can also earn points for caring actions and the top scorers will appear in a 'League of Care' table on the Facebook page.
New hidden ‘truth’ items throughout the app will reveal facts about homelessness and users will be able to donate to make a difference by SMS, although there will be a small service charge from the mobile provider.
The updated app also allows for more personalisation as users can choose to input their name and develop a deeper relationship with their iHobo.
Paul Marriott, chief executive of Depaul UK, said: “There is a real fear that young people sleeping on the streets will increase over the next five years, and we hope this app will help us communicate the severity of this issue to the general public.”
