A mobile app created by the Salvation Army has received more than 190,000 downloads in six weeks, with 6.2 per cent of users clicking the ‘donate now’ button.
The Daily Cup social justice app provides information on hunger, hopelessness, HIV/AIDS, human trafficking and natural disasters and encourages donations of both time and money.
The app was created in the US using Magmito, a cross-platform mobile content solution from DIDMO, and is available worldwide from GetJar, the world’s largest open app store.
In addition to those users who clicked to ‘donate $10 now’ button, 3.9 per cent submitted the volunteer form.
On Java based phones such as Blackberrys or those using the Android operating system, the Daily Cup operates as a native app, while on iPhones, it operates as an advanced web-based application.
In doing so it circumnavigates Apple’s ban on donation functionality, although it also means the app is not available through the software giant’s App Store.
