Beatbullying charity plans global virtual march

IT | Kirsty Weakley | 14 Nov 2011

Beatbullying is organising a virtual march to call on the United Nations to add bullying to the Convention on the Rights of the Child.

The Big March 2012 will start on 31 January 2012 to coincide with Anti-Bullying Week and will end about two days later at a virtual representation of the United Nations Building in New York where a petition will be presented.

Earlier this month Beatbullying was awarded silver for ‘Best Use of the Internet in a Promotional Marketing Campaign' at the Marketing Agencies Assocation Worldwide Globes ceremony for last year's the Big March. More than 100 UK corporate and charity websites took part in a virtual march to deliver an anti-bullying petition to a virtual 10 Downing Street. The charity hopes that this year's march will become the first worldwide virtual protest.

The charity is hoping that two million people will take part since more than 135,000 supporters have already signed up, including famous names such as Twiggy, Sir Michael Parkinson, Jedward, Pixie Lott and Aston Merrygold. Supporters can pre-register for the march and create an online avatar of themselves.

Charities and brands already supporting the campaign this year include Nominet Trust, Barry M, Robinson Fruit Shoot, Girlguiding UK, Facebook and Universal Music.

Emma-Jane Cross, chief executive of Beatbullying, said: “United we’re stronger, and the support of organisations and business around the globe is vital to achieve a world where bullying is a thing of thepast: so we’re asking for the support of parents, teachers, young people, brands and communities from all corners of the globe on the Big March 2012.

"Together we can make a difference to children’s rights with the largest globally-connected digital takeover the world has ever seen.”

Organisations and individuals wishing to take part can sign up online or email info@beatbullying.org.

Charles Bosher from Beatbullying will be talking about the success of the fundraising campaign at next week's Mobile and Digital Conference 2011, organised by Fundraising magazine. To register or read the programme click here
