Green website goes viral on Bebo and Facebook

IT | 1 Dec 2008

Greenvoice has capitalised on the social networking phenomenon by using Facebook and Bebo to promote a campaign encouraging communities to say no to excess packaging.

Greenvoice.com, a non-profit website enabling like-minded individuals to take action on green issues, joined forces with viral content distributor, The 7th Chamber, to run a viral campaign for two weeks in October.

In its bid for change, Greenvoice aimed to reach the most environmentally-active audience – young people. So it set up a Facebook fan page and launched a viral campaign - a humorous play about a girl that wrapped herself up in plastic as she walked past supermarkets on her way to meet her boyfriend.

The campaign attracted almost 4,000 signatures for its petition to lobby the government on the overuse of plastic packaging by supermarkets and product manufacturers.

The viral, which scored 65,000 views amongst the Bebo community, was branded a "definite success" by marketing director Giles Robertson.

He said: "With a modest budget within the means of most charities, the campaign successfully reached all of its targets. Of course you must be relaxed with some targets and specific with others. A good strong creative idea is also important."

For the time being, the UK continues to produce enough packaging waste to fill Wembley Stadium almost nine times over each year.
