Oxfam is first International NGO to publish eBook

Oxfam has published a digital edition of its report, Growing a Better Future: Food Justice in a resource-constrained world, for Kindles and other readers, making it the first international non-governmental organisation to publish an eBook.

The report, first published in print in June, hit headlines when it warned that food prices could as much as double in the next 20 years due to dwindling natural resources and climate change. Millions more could be left hungry, the report asserted.

It has been re-launched digitally to coincide with Oxfam's GROW Week campaign, which aims to highlight the world's "broken food system". The eBook contains additional case studies from Bolivia and Malawi as well as further research adding emphasis to the original publication.

The digital edition is available to download free from the Amazon Kindle store as a 6MB eBook for iOS, Android, Windows Phone 7, and desktop eBook readers, or from the Oxfam website as a 39MB iBook edition, which includes video for the iPad, iPhone, or iPod touch. Brazil's former President Lula da Silva, offers his filmed endorsement in the iBook edition and there is also a short film on India's failing food system.

Oxfam is set to release a series of eBooks in the near future. Teresa Cavero, Oxfam's GROW campaign research lead said of the charity's first entry into the medium: "It is a powerful new way to access authoritative research, on-the-ground experience and key policy in support of a movement for a world where everyone has enough to eat. Oxfam is delighted to be working with industry leaders like Apple and Amazon to bring this material to a new audience."

Currently only available in English, the eBook will shortly also be released in French and Spanish.
