Nominet Trust offers £500,000 for community IT projects 1

Community IT projects in England are being invited to apply for grants of up to £5,000 to get more people online, as a result of a partnership between the Nominet Trust and UK Online Centres.

There is approximately £500,000 available through the Community Outreach Fund which will be administered by UK online centres. The deadline for applications is 19 August for projects to be delivered between September 2011 and March 2012.

Annika Small, director of the Nominet Trust, said: “We are delighted to be working with UK Online Centres to promote groundbreaking new ways of helping communities to use the internet.”

UK Online Centres currently has a network of 3,800 local centres across England, offering free or low-cost access to the internet as well as support and learning.

Managing director of UK Online Centres Helen Milner said: “It’s not enough to wait for people to step through the doors of a college, library or community centre – we’ve got to take the internet out to where they live, work or socialise.”

She added: “We’re looking for projects that think outside the box about how and where they go to inspire and help people get online.”

Funding is available for both revenue and capital expenditure, and to be successful, applicants need to demonstrate the social impact of their activity, provide evidence that their community is ‘hard to reach’, and hold at least one supported training session per week.

Organisations do not have to already be a UK Online Centres partner to apply but will need to sign up as part of their application. To apply go to UK Online Centres' website.

Under our new project 'insight' bringing support services to the sight impaired, partially sighted and people with low vision as experienced in Macular Degeneration we will be facillitating the use of specialist IT equipment and encouring our clients to access 'on line' services.

Our programmes offer email counselling & mentoring, life mapping and Assesment & referral services.
