Who’s Moving: WaterAid UK, Crystal Palace Foundation, Gingerbread, and more

Our weekly round-up of all the latest movers in the charity sector.

Chief executive

WaterAid UK has announced that Tim Wainwright will take over from current chief executive Barbara Frost, after she retires from the organisation in May 2017. 

He will take up his new role on 2 May, and joins WaterAid UK from international NGO, Action on Disability and Development, where has been chief executive for the last six years. Prior to joining ADD, Wainwright held senior roles at the Equality and Human Rights Commission, VSO and Oxfam.

He replaces Barbara Frost, who is retiring from the organisation after 11 years at the helm. 

Mike Summers has been appointed chief executive of the Crystal Palace FC Foundation, the charitable partner of Crystal Palace Football Club. 

Summers joins from Prostate Cancer UK, where he helped lead its Men United campaign partnership with the English Football League and League Managers Association. He’s also the former chief executive of England Athletics. 

The Crystal Palace Foundation operates across four south east London boroughs and provides affordable coaching and mentoring services for primary and secondary schools sports programmes. 

Single parent family support charity Gingerbread has announced the appointment of Rosie Ferguson as its new chief executive. 

Ferguson will join the organisation on 15 February from Youth Business International, where she was interim director. Prior to this, Ferguson was chief executive of London Youth, having spent her earlier career working with young people. 

She is a trustee of the Centre for London, and a former commissioner on the London Fairness Commission. 

Fundraising and communications

National sight loss charity, RP Fighting Blindness, has appointed Deborah Laing as trusts and major donor manager. The role has been specifically created in the organisation for her. 

Laing has worked in fundraising for nine years, and prior to joining RP Fighting Blindness, was development manager for Peace Hospice Care. She also worked for St Margaret’s Somerset Hospice. 

Joining Laing as a new appointment at the organisation is Emma Hughes, who has been appointed deputy chief executive of the organisation. 

Finance and strategy

David Ashton-Jones has been appointed operations manager of Disability Action Yorkshire

Ashton-Jones’ new role is a newly-created one for the organisation, and his main role will be to increase awareness and use of assistive technology for disabled people in all departments throughout both the charity itself, and the community. 

This is his first role in the charity sector, having worked as a technology and finance consultant. Ashton-Jones is also a member of the Chartered Management Institute. 

Non executive

Former chair of PwC, Sir Ian Powell, has been appointed as a trustee of Wellbeing for Women

Powell, who was knighted in the most recent set of New Year’s honours for his work in professional services and charitable causes, left PwC in June 2016, having completed his second four-year term as chair. 

Powell joined PwC as a graduate trainee in 1977 , and was elected chair and senior partner on 1 July 2008.
