Our weekly summary of the latest movers in the charity sector.


Chief executive

Action for Pulmonary Fibrosis, the campaigning charity for UK patients with the lung disease, has appointed Louise Wright as chief executive. 

Wright has worked in the charity sector for over 20 years predominantly as a fundraiser with national charities such as NSPCC and Shelter, before becoming chief executive of Back Up, the national paralysis charity. 

She also volunteers for a number of charities and helped found Vitality, a charity working in developing countries. 


Fundraising and communications

Macmillan Cancer Support has announced the appointment of Claire Rowney as its new executive director of fundraising, marketing and communications. 

Rowney will join the organisation in February, taking over from Richard Taylor who is stepping down from Macmillan to pursue a career in executive coaching. 

She joins Macmillan from Save the Children, where she is currently executive director of fundraising and marketing. Prior to joining Save the Children, Rowney worked for Cancer Research UK for 13 years in its innovation and corporate partnerships team.

Finance and strategy

Rita Akushie has been appointed chief financial officer at Cancer Research UK

She will join the charity on 14 January 2019 and takes over from interim chief financial officer Nigel Armitt who in turn replaced Ian Kenyon who left to join UK Research and Innovation last year. 

Akushie has worked in auditing for 28 years and was most recently interim chief finance officer at Sovereign housing association. Prior to that she worked at Thames Valley Housing Association and for 13 years was with Newlon Group. 


Non executive

The Film and Television Charity has announced the appointment of Melanie Tansey and Lori Houlihan as its two new trustees.

Tansey is currently HR director at media organisation ITN, while Lori Houlihan is vice-provost at University College London and leads on its external affairs function. 

It has also been announced today that Houlihan will be joining the Fundraising Regulator as an external members of its standards committee. Read the full story here.
