Community foundations hit £1bn milestone in support to local charities

Community foundations have collectively given out over £1bn to local charities over the last decade, the body for the organisations has announced today on Local Charities Day.

UK Community Foundations is the umbrella body for the 46 Community Foundations, which are all independent charities which work in their local areas.

Fabian French, chief executive of UK Community Foundations, said “At UK Community Foundations we’re proud to work with incredible local charities day in day out. We understand the needs of the communities we work in and direct grants to causes that will meet that need and will make the biggest difference. That’s why we passionately support Local Charities Day and why Community Foundations are what the chair of the Charity Commission says ‘exactly what charities should be’.”

Local Charities Day has been organised by the Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport and aims to celebrate the work of local charities and the work they do in their communities, as well as encourage the public to donate to their causes.

UK Community Foundations said that this milestone shows the impact that Community Foundations have had on local communities. In the last year alone they distributed £77m in grants and 4.7m people were impacted by their work.
