Homelessness charity Shelter has appointed Greg Beales, a former executive director at the Labour Party, as its director of communications, policy and campaigns.

Beales will start the role this month, reporting to Shelter’s chief executive Polly Neate who started in August.

Beales joins the charity from multinational advertising and PR agency WPP where he has worked as a senior director since 2015. Prior to that he was executive director at the Labour Party responsible for strategy and planning between 2010 and 2015.

He was also a senior advisor in Downing Street between 2006 and 2010 working under both Gordon Brown and Tony Blair. During this time he was national performance director for the NHS where he is credited for leading work on bringing down waiting times for treatment and improving hospital cleanliness.

Beales has also worked on the development of the Living Wage campaign.

On his appointment, Beales said: “In the aftermath of the dreadful loss of life at Grenfell Tower it has never been more important that the voices of those who live in social housing and who need social housing are heard.

“It is a particular responsibility to be joining Shelter at this time and I look forward to helping to make the case for better treatment for those who rent and more safe, high-quality and affordable social housing which our country so desperately needs.”

He will be leading Shelter’s high level campaigns to fight for renters’ rights, access to housing and ensuring developers build their fair share of affordable homes.
