Philanthropy

Philanthropy is a term given to generous acts of selfless giving. In particular it relates to sharing financial wealth for the purpose of improving the wellbeing of mankind or society as a whole.

Charitable donations are an example of philanthropy when given in large sums. Philanthropists often choose to set up a trust so that their donations can be distributed appropriately over time, even after their own death.

Modern philanthropy has become big business, with many commercial and not-for-profit organisations setting up services to help wealthy donors give their money away effectively and tax-effectively.
