The Office of the Scottish Charity Regulator (OSCR) is investigating whether Scotland’s biggest mosque has undermined its charitable status by refusing to accept women as voting members.
Nazia Iqbal told Civil Society Media that she complained to OSCR after Glasgow Central Mosque turned down her request to become a member. She was told women were not eligible for membership.
Iqbal has asked OSCR to check whether the mosque has broken any charity legislation with its stance. She has also asked Glasgow Central Mosque to justify its position.
Dubbed a "Muslim suffragette" by various bloggers writing on the issue, Iqbal said: "I was shocked when I was knocked back. I just found it downright wrong that a committee decided that women can't be members."
An OSCR spokesman said it had received a complaint from Iqbal and was assessing it. The Glasgow Central Mosque did not respond to enquiries by the time of going to press.

Good. It's about time someone stood up to Islamic discrimination against women.
