Scottish chairs over-confident?

Scottish charity chairs are consistently more positive about board performance than their chief officers, and this divide is more marked than in the public or private sectors, according to research by OSCR with Cranfield University.

Most of the views were positive, but the gaps between the views of chairs and their chief officers are “much higher than they are for other surveys undertaken to date, which could be a tension point within the Scottish third sector”.

The greatest variation was with regard to the performance of the chair, with both chief officers and board members giving much lower scores than chairs themselves (see chart).

The research also reveals that 62 per cent of Scottish charity chief officers are female, compared with 54 per cent of board members and 53 per cent of chairs.

Respondents in the 40 to 49 age bracket tended to be less positive about the performance of the chair, board and chief officers than other age groups.
