Regulator to produce model board paper on recession issues

Governance | Tania Mason | 27 Mar 2009

The Charity Commission is to produce a checklist of issues that trustees of smaller charities ought to be considering to help ensure their organisation survives the recession.

The checklist will be presented in the format of an interactive model board paper and the Commission hopes it will be available to download from its website within a few weeks.  A draft is expected to be presented to the next Commission board meeting in May.

The checklist was prompted by the Commission's second Economic Survey of  Charities, which demonstrated that smaller organisations were the most likely to need specialist advice and support during the downturn.

Andrew Hind, Commission chief executive, said: "We think this will be a useful tool for charity trustees to help them think about the key issues they should be addressing to ensure, as far as possible, that the needs of their beneficiaries can continue to be met in the current climate."

It will address three broad areas that trustees should consider:

  •  Ensuring the charity remains a going concern
  • Ensuring the charity's governance is sound and robust
  • Ensuring the charity makes effective use of its resources

The Commission plans to hold three regional focus groups to test whether it has identified the right issues and advice to include in the model board paper.
