More than one-third of honours go to sector

Governance | Celina Ribeiro | 6 Jan 2009

Nearly 40 per cent of all New Years’ honours were given out to individuals for service to voluntary and community services.

Knighthoods went to Mark Walport, director of the Wellcome Trust, Terrence Higgins Trust chief executive Nick Partridge and interfaith movement leader Dr Indarjit Singh, director of the Network of Sikh Organisations.

Major philanthropists were among those receiving knighthoods this year with Reading Football Club chairman John Madejski and David Johns, head of retail chain Next and founder of the Cure Parkinson’s Trust, both receiving the honour.

CBEs were also scooped up by individuals working or volunteering in the community sector. Sue Hammerson, founder of the Sue Hammerson Trust; Prison Reform Trust director Juliet Lyon; Dr Rosalind Savill, director of the Wallace Collection and James Hervey Bathurst, president of the Historic Houses Association, were among these.

The New Years Honours List acknowledged the work of 966 people in various fields, 39 per cent of which were awarded to individuals for services to the community – a figure which does not include individuals contributing to the not-for-profit education and arts sectors.

Janice Cave, director of public affairs at the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents, was one of a large number of sector workers to accept MBEs. “I am delighted that work I enjoy so much should be worthy of an honour. It is wonderful that RoSPA’s vital work in accident prevention is being recognised,” she said.
