Commission makes Hobson choice

Fundraising | Ian Allsop | 1 Dec 2007

The Charity Commission has appointed Beryl Hobson (pictured) as the new head of its large charities division.

Hobson’s most recent appointment was as interim chief executive of Group B Strep Support, a national charity providing information and support to families and health professionals. She has been actively involved with charities for many years in a number of roles including trustee and independent examiner.

The large charities division manages and delivers the Commission’s advice and support services to the 1,400 English charities whose annual income exceeds £5m, accounting for 60 per cent of the total income in the sector.

Hobson started her career in the insurance industry, and was marketing director for Cassidy Davis Insurance Group at Lloyd’s of London. Following a career break she was appointed as the chair of a NHS Primary Care Trust in East Sussex with an income of £160m.  She is a lay member for the Bar Standards Boards, which includes being a panel member on barristers’ disciplinary tribunals.

Hobson succeeds Andrea Brolly, who is on maternity leave and is expected to return to the Commission in a different role.
