WRVS restructure to result in up to 100 jobs lost

The conclusion of an organisational restructure at WRVS could result in as many as 100 redundancies, the charity for the elderly has announced.

A WRVS spokeswoman said that the exact number of job losses was not known at this time, but 100 would be “the absolute maximum”.

“We don’t know how many overall redundancies are likely, but formal notifications have gone out,” she said. “We are working to keep all job losses voluntary, and the situation is sadly an unavoidable consequence of the restructuring process.

“On the other hand, we are confident of filling 67 new posts by September.”

David McCullough, who replaced Lynne Berry as chief executive of the charity in October last year, admitted in a statement that redundancies were “possible” but stressed that the charity is ultimately expanding.

“WRVS is coming to the end of a major restructure [since 2009] that will, despite government cuts, result in the charity growing its services so that we can better support the increasing number of older people to lead their lives in the way that they would like,” he said.

“Our trustees have just agreed to invest more than £1m to create 67 posts to manage our new community hubs which will mean we are able to offer an improved and more tailored service to older people in more areas of Britain.”

The charity carried out a national consultation process from October 2011 through to February 2012 to try to make sure that its plans received support and were fair. The restructure and implementation of these community hubs will mean that there will be just one integrated delivery structure per locality, instead of the multiple independent bodies that currently run.
