A coalition of charities are hosting a free conference this month on the future of the benevolent sector, which will look at the challenges for the sector, explore public benefit and discuss opportunities for more collaboration.
Elizabeth Finn Care, the Association of Charity Officers, nfpSynergy and the Directory of Social Change are jointly holding the event called 'Shaping the future of benevolence'.
Along with a series of seminars, attendees will hear the findings of a survey into the benevolent sector carried out by nfpSynergy.
The conference will also look at public benefit of benevolent funds. Attorney General Dominic Grieve QC MP has asked the Charity Tribunal to consider if the Charities Act 2006 has removed the presumption of public benefit for certain types of benevolent fund which have a limited pool of beneficiaries. The hearing is expected in November.
Dame Diana Brittan, chairman of Independent Age, who is chairing the conference, said:
“The reality is, many benevolent charities are experiencing falling incomes, coupled with an increased demand for services. This event provides a much-needed opportunity for organisations within the benevolent sector to come together.”
