The National Audit Office has carried out its second follow-up inspection of the Charity Commission and plans to publish an overview of its findings next month.

Earlier this week William Shawcross, chair of the Commission, told delegates at the Charity Finance Summit, organised by Civil Society Media, that the regulator is waiting to find out the results of the NAO's most recent visit.

He said that following the Cup Trust scandal, where it emerged that a registered charity was being used in an attempted tax avoidance scheme, the NAO "investigated us and wrote a very critical report".

"There was another report in 2015 which was much better," he added.

He revealed that the NAO would publish a further document on the Commission next month.

"I hope it will be better still, but I haven't seen it yet," he said.

In 2013 the NAO said the Commission was too passive and that it was not meeting its statutory objectives. By 2015 NAO said that the Commission had made good progress but that there was still more to do.

The NAO has confirmed that it intends to publish an overview of the regulator's work in November. Civil Society News understands that the new document is a less significant intervention that the reports from the last two inspections, and - unlike both of those reports - will not be formally laid before parliament.
