Charity Commission freezes bank accounts of charity under police investigation

17 May 2017 News

The Charity Commission has opened a statutory inquiry and frozen the bank accounts of a charity which is being investigated by police over its finances.

The Jack Raine Community Foundation works with children and families and runs coaching sessions in contact and non-contact martial arts and education.

The Commission said it was alerted by Yorkshire Police to a financial investigation being conducted into the charity, which prompted the regulator to make an unannounced visit to the charity’s premises.

The Commision found that there were insufficient financial records and no evidence of trustee meeting minutes, and said it has "further serious regulatory concerns”.

The inquiry will look at whether the charity’s financial controls are appropriate and whether trustees have complied with charity law.

The Commission has used its powers to freeze the charity’s bank accounts.

The charity had an annual income of £215,000 for the financial year ending February 2016.

Civil Society Media hosts a number of governance training courses throughout the year. For more information, and to book, click here.
