Controversial Charity Commission board member Gwythian Prins stood down from his role at the regulator at its last meeting on 25 January, it has been revealed.

He had been a board member since 2013 and had been due to leave in June. A commission spokesman said Prins had “stepped down early due to his other work commitments”.

Last year Prins faced criticism over an essay he wrote about the European Union, which was published by the Institute of Economic Affairs.

Williams Shawcross, chair of the commission, and the Cabinet Office looked into the concerns and concluded that Prins had made an “inadvertent error” in not informing the board ahead of publication.

This news means that the regulator now has eight board members, including chair Shawcross.

A spokeswoman for the Office for Civil Society said that an announcement would be made “in due course”.
