Community isn't led by government, so why wait for it to tell you what to do, protests Robert Ashton....
It was only a matter of time before someone picked up on expenses in the charity sector (Should charity chief execs expenses be disclosed?).
I believe we should try and be on the front foot and that charities should make a commitment now to publish the expenses of chief executives and senior directors in their annual reports. Given that annual reports should identify categories of staff receiving different levels of pay, it should be relatively easy to add some expenses figures.
The categories could be: travel, accommodation and entertainment.
Speedy action would be desirable and CEOs should commit to producing summary statements now covering 2008-9 and then integrating them automatically in annual reports for 2009-10 onwards.

This is a typical 3rd sector reaction to a non-issue.
Charities are governed by Trustees who have the responsibilty of deciding what, if any, payments should be made from the charities' funds. If funders are concerned then take it up with the charity not with some self-appointed, self-interested journalists looking out for the next pay cheque. I'd rather see that charities were addressing the issues on their agenda and not pretending that they are MP's by responding to this latest round of media-inspired irrelevancy.
