BBC to run charity-focused programmes on local and national radio

The BBC is set to run a series of programmes on local and national radio focused on charities, a spokesman said today.

The programmes will "look at the scale and scope of the sector" and will be based on new research produced by Acevo, CharityComms, the Charities Aid Foundation and the Institute of Fundraising.

A BBC spokesperson said: “On Thursday and Friday BBC local radio will look at the scale and scope of the charity sector, how it operates, and the challenges it faces. There will be fresh analysis of how much the sector as a whole contributes to individuals, and to communities”.

“A range of national and local charities will be featured, alongside interviews with chief executives, trustees, celebrity ambassadors and regulating bodies and there will be stories of those whom charities have helped”.

Vicky Browning, chief executive of Acevo, welcomed the announcement and said the programmes will play a “vital” role in reminding the public of the good that the sector does.

“Recent times have seen charities coming under the spotlight and while it’s right that charities are transparent and held to account, it’s vital that a small number of high-profile incidents, negative stories and individual cases don’t tarnish the public’s sense of the value of charities as a whole,” said Browning.

“To address this, Acevo, CAF, CharityComms and the Institute of Fundraising have worked together to produce fresh analysis of the collective impact of charities across the UK. The report is part of the ongoing drive to work more collegiately across the sector as it deals with the challenge it faces. We hope this report, which highlights the huge role charities play in almost every aspect of our daily lives, and our media activity starts to normalise the discussion of charities and our work.”

Ben Russell, director of communications at the Charities Aid Foundation, said: “It is really important that we tell the story of the great work charities do. As CAF’s research consistently shows, charities make a huge contribution to people’s lives, but sometimes that message doesn’t always get through”.

Ceri Edwards, director of engagement and external affairs at the IoF, said: “The impact that charities and our members have in every community and around the world is phenomenal. We know that much of this work is only possible because of fundraisers and the generosity of the public. So we are delighted that the BBC will be highlighting this in its programming over the next few days and looking at the challenges and opportunities facing charities today.”

Among the programmes will be The Bottom Line, hosted by Evan Davis a presenter of Newsnight, which will look at the challenges of running a charity at 8.30pm tomorrow.

A number of programmes are expected on local radio tomorrow and Friday.
