Alzheimer’s Society has appointed Breast Cancer Campaign’s director of fundraising to head its fundraising department.
Liz Monks will leave the breast cancer charity to take up the director of fundraising position at Alzheimer’s Society vacated by Jo Swinhoe last year. Monks is the second senior recruit for Alzheimer’s Society from the breast cancer sector, following chief executive Jeremy Hughes’ move from Breakthrough Breast Cancer to the charity in November 2010.
Monks said she is looking forward to building on the success of Alzheimer’s fundraising team, which has grown income by nearly 50 per cent between 2007 and 2011, with income at £60.5m in the last financial year on record.
“‘Having worked in the breast cancer field for the last three and a half years and seen the incredible work Jeremy Hughes did to make Breakthrough Breast Cancer the charity it is, I particularly look forward to working with him as my CEO and with the rest of the strategic leadership team.’
Hughes welcomed Monks’ move to his new organisation. “She is bringing a wealth of fundraising and leadership expertise that will be put to good use as we continue our success of recent years,” he said. “With experience in both the not-for-profit and business sectors, Liz will be a real asset to the charity as we continue the fight against dementia.’
Monks has been director of fundraising at Breast Cancer Campaign since 2009, before which she headed up fundraising at Action for Children. She also chaired the Institute of Fundraising’s National Convention this month. Monks is due to start at Alzheimer’s Society on 10 September.
