Dame Anne Owers OBE is the chair of Christian Aid, a post she has held since 2008. In January 2001 she will also become chair of Clinks, a charity promoting volunteering and community work with offenders in England and Wales.
Until mid 2010 Owers was employed as Her Majesty’s chief inspector of prisons, since 2001. She is the first female to have ever been appointed to this role.
As a committed human rights campaigner she became a Dame in the Queen’s New Year Honours list of 2008, in recognition of her services to the Criminal Justice System - a sector in which she has worked for more than 25 years.
Prior to this, she was general secretary of the Joint Council for the Welfare of Immigrants, before becoming director of the law reform group Justice between 1992 and 2001.
