Gosschalk swaps Shelter for AMREF

Fundraising | 2 Jun 2009

Shelter’s current director of fundraising Alan Gosschalk is taking up an interim post at the African Medical and Research Foundation (AMREF) UK, in a move which sees him go from a £50m charity to one that hopes to raise £6m this year.

Gosschalk (pictured) has been appointed interin director of fundraising and communication at AMREF following post holder Paul Marvell’s move to the new position of director of learning at the Institute of Fundraising. Marvell joined AMREF ten months ago.

Gosschalk has headed the fundraising team of Shelter’s 1,000 strong staff for nine years, during which time he has more than doubled the charity’s voluntary income. He also led a private big gift appeal which raised more than £5.6m for a new homeless children’s service.

His departure was the result of a restructure at Shelter which saw a total of 43 people lose their jobs.

Over the past five years AMREF UK’s annual income has increased by more than 58 per cent. The charity has just 16 employees.

Gosschalk said: “I'm so excited about this opportunity. As someone with African roots, I'm delighted to be able to help AMREF provide innovative, African solutions to Africa's health problems by growing the organisation’s profile and income.

“AMREF has fantastic supporters and is doing groundbreaking work across Africa — including in the village of Katine, Uganda, with the support of the Guardian and Barclays. I look forward to building on the organisation’s recent string of successes.

“Despite the challenging economic climate, I believe that AMREF is well-positioned to continue to make a difference in the lives of Africa’s most vulnerable people.”

Gosschalk will join the charity shortly before Marvell leaves on June 12.

Louise Parkes is joining Shelter as director of fundraising and will take up the position on 1 June. She was head of fundraising at Help the Aged before the charity merged with Age Concern.
