Gift Aid Small Donations Scheme 'too complex to have real impact'

A competition to give away a block of London flats with some cash going to the Great Ormond Street Hospital charity is still faltering despite numerous changes to the rules.
Originally the winalondonpad.com competition set up by MIA developments asked entrants to pay £50 to win a block of 11 flats in London, with £3 from each ticket sale going to Great Ormond Street Hospital, where MIA’s managing director’s nephew was once treated.
But when ticket sales failed to materialise organisers gave one property away, dropped the entry price to £25 and extended the deadlines.
Another draw will not be made until 9 September now but this could change again as just 9,095 tickets have been sold – against a target of 200,000.
MIA spokesperson Carl Steer told PF: “We’ve changed the dynamic slightly, and they are still moveable goalposts. We have the ability to put another few months on or we can give a cash alternative."
No one was available to talk to PF from Great Ormond Street Hospital but in a statement a spokesperson said: "We’re very pleased for the first winner of the flat and delighted that almost £40,000 has been raised so far.
"The money is going towards a four-bed cardiac ward in our new Heart and Lung Centre due to open in 2012 which will enable us to treat more children in a state-of-the-art building."
