Unicef in FRSB adjudication

Fundraising | Celina Ribeiro | 30 Apr 2009

Unicef has changed its campaign material after accusations of “wildly exaggerated claims” led to a complaint to the Fundraising Standards Board (FRSB).

The FRSB today released details of its adjudication – the second in the organisation’s two year history - which was informally resolved.

Unicef chose to change its ‘Child Immunisation Card’ campaign material after the FRSB decided parts of the leaflet could be construed as “exaggeration” but there was no intent to mislead.

A single member of the public complained to the FRSB last year that an appeal in the June/July issue of Radio Times, made “wildly exaggerated claims” about the efficacy of child immunisation and vaccines.

The complaint reached a stage three adjudication after the complainant refused to accept Unicef’s response which maintained the advert was neither exaggerated nor misleading.

It is the second complaint that has reached the final stage of the FRSB’s process. The first was against Cancer Research UK and related to the number of pens being sent in the post.

An FRSB spokesperson said: “We have worked closely with Unicef who have agreed to make changes to the relevant copy in this leaflet as indicated in the adjudication report and we are satisfied that no further action is necessary. Unicef champions best fundraising practice and supports the principles of self-regulation.”
