Goverment begins handing out recession funding

Fundraising | Vibeka Mair | 27 Apr 2009

Government funding of £15m for small, local third sector providers which have experienced increased demand as a result of the recession will be given to 50 areas considered ‘most at risk of increased deprivation’ in the coming weeks.

The Targeted Support Fund, which forms part of the government’s £42.5m ‘recession fund’ for the voluntary sector, will focus on charities that deal with financial advice, employment support and personal problems such as mental health or substance abuse.

Funding pots for charities based in the 50 areas considered ‘most at risk of increased deprivation’ will range from £1m to £97,000.

Merger and collaboration fund

Meanwhile, a further £16.5m to help charities look at mergers and collaborations will comprise of grants and loans.

The Modernisation Fund website, which launched this week, will initially allow charities to apply for interest-free loans of over £30,000.

The loans, which will be distributed by Futurebuilders, are targeted at third sector organisations with existing plans for mergers and collaboration, or who wish to take forward other activity to help their business prepare for difficult times

And from early June, third sector organisations will be able to apply for £1,000 bursaries and grants of up to £10,000.

The grant programme will be delivered by Capacitybuilders and funding is targeted at third sector organisations which have an annual income of between £150,000 and £750,000 and are providing services to those worst hit by the recession.

The grant programme will provide an online toolkit designed to identify a charity’s needs at the end of the month and local workshops will take place across England from May.
