The London Marathon Charitable Trust has awarded more than £5m in grants to build, preserve and refurbish sports facilities in the capital from surplus funds made at last year's event.
Each year the surplus from London Marathon Ltd, which organises the marathon and other events in the city, is transferred under gift aid to the Trust. In 2008-09 this surplus was £4.5m and rose to £5.3m last year.
Grants of between £1,852 and £235,000 were awarded to 59 projects in 25 local authorities in or around London, and £1m has been set aside to support community legacy facilities after the 2012 Olympics.
John Bryant, chairman of the Trust, said: “One of the primary objects of the race when it was founded 30 years ago was to help provide facilities for recreation and leisure, and it is heartening to know that the event’s success means we have been able to increase the overall value of our grants each year.”
Over £40m has now been donated in grants by the Trust.
