The Big Give has introduced a £50m government matched-funding facility for donors to support community foundations.
‘Grassroots grants’ offers small community-based organisations matched funding worth 50 per cent or 100 per cent of donations provided that the money is siphoned off for endowments. Sixty-one community foundations are currently represented on the Big Give website.
The cash is widely available and the programme is due to run until 2011, so it is unlikely to overload the website, which crashed repeatedly at the end of last year when founder Alec Reed made a £1m matched funding pot available.
In light of the fact that many small community foundations do not have their own online donation facilities, the Big Give will claim the matched funding from the government on their behalf.
At PF’s Digital Communications Conference yesterday (Wednesday 21 January) Jon Brooks urged people to take advantage of the opportunities matched funding presents in every area of their fundraising. He said the idea of doubling donations "creates a real buzz".
