Love for sale this Valentine's Day

Fundraising | 5 Feb 2009

They say money can't buy you love, but an innovative fundraising campaign will put paid to that next month.

www.adoptaword.com will hold a special auction for the word ‘love' in the run-up to St Valentine's Day on auction website eBay.

As well as ownership of the word and a certificate, the highest bidder will receive a one-off leather-bound Collins dictionary with a special dedication printed next to the word love, and a balloon ride across London.

Proceeds from the auction will go to children's charity I Can, which works with children with communication difficulties.

I Can's director of fundraising, Charlie Simpson, told Charity News Alert: "We are making it the ultimate bundle of love, with a certificate from Collins saying you are the official owner, the dictionary and the Red Letter Day as well. And we have got our thinking caps on to identify all those other words people might want to give as an alternative Valentine's gift."

He added: "Everyone would love to be the proud owner of the word ‘sexy'!"

The campaign, which launched in November, is beating its fundraising target, something Simpson attributes to it being "a simple idea which has really captured the public imagination".
