International association for impact analysts launched

Fundraising | Celina Ribeiro | 10 Mar 2011

Social impact analysts around the world now have their own professional organisation designed to promote dialogue about how best to measure charities’ impact and effectiveness.

Nearly two years after New Philanthropy Capital pitched the idea to the international delegates at its Valuing Impact conference, the British organisation has brought on board Germany’s Bertelsmann Foundation and the Dutch Adessium Foundation as founding partners of the Social Impact Analysts (SIA) Association.

SIA is the first association of its kind and is expecting an international membership. The organisation hopes to encourage dialogue about different approaches and methodologies in surveying and reporting on the impact of not-for-profit organisations around the world and through this, promote impact analysis as a profession.

While announced today, the SIA will not begin accepting members until the summer when it will have developed a price structure and range of services for members.

The SIA will host its first annual conference later this year, but NPC’s Sue Wixley said that the main function of the SIA will be an interactive website for members, and potentially further down the track working groups on various themes.

In the lead up to launching the membership offering, SIA will be conducting market research on what members want it to provide. “We very much want it to be shaped by the members,” said Wixley.

Dr Brigitte Mohn, of the Bertelsmann Foundation, said her organisation hopes the SIA will have an impact on the global charity sector. “We look forward to seeing its members work towards a better understanding of the charity and non-profit sector, and in this way, contributing to building a healthy and vibrant sector in Europe and beyond,” she said. 1

The SIA has now begun the process of recruiting a coordinator, a post which will be based within NPC’s office in London, who will be charged with promoting the organisation.
