Intelligent Giving is preparing to unveil the results of a mystery shopping exercise which it claims will show that most street fundraisers pay scant regard to many of the rules governing the practice.
The findings were collated by researchers acting as prospective donors and observing whether street fundraisers obeyed disclosure and other rules on face-to-face fundraising contained in the Charities Act and the Institute of Fundraising's new face-to-face code.
The researchers mystery-shopped 50 fundraisers, both agency and in-house staff representing 18 different charities, at a number of London locations over a six-week period.
Adam Rothwell, Intelligent Giving's director (pictured), said the researchers scored the fundraisers on various behaviour, including whether their ID was visible, how polite they were, whether they harassed their targets, and how much they knew about the charity.
They also noted whether the chuggers followed the new legal obligation to state that they are paid, and how much they as an in-house employee, or their agency if they are employed by one, receives for the work.
See professionalfundraising.co.uk on Monday for the full findings.
