A record £21m has been raised in one night by the BBC’s flagship Children in Need telethon.
The fundraising total for the show, which aired on Friday, November 14, stands at £20,991,216 and marks a leap from last year’s total of around £19m - a record-breaking amount at the time.
In ratings terms, also, Children in Need broke last year’s records. At its peak, 11.4 million viewers tuned in to watch Pudsey, Terry Wogan and other BBC staples from 7pm until the early hours of the morning, compared to 10.9 million in 2007.
Charities may remain hopeful that the strong performance of the telethon, amid an environment of near-economic panic, could bode well for the size of the total pot Children in Need may have to give away. Earlier this year the grant-making charity announced it was giving away a record £37m to over 500 charities as a result of a profitable fundraising year in 2007, buoyed significantly by the contribution of last November’s Children in Need telethon.
