Tesco has donated £40,000 to the British Red Cross to support the charity’s emergency aid operations in South East Asia.
£20,000 of the money will go towards the charity’s disaster fund. It will be spent on flood relief work in Vietnam and emergency resources for people affected by the earthquake, tsunami and volcanic eruption in Indonesia.
The Thai Red Cross and Malay Red Crescent will each receive £10,000 to help flood victims in Thailand and Malaysia.
Tesco have generated the funds through corporate donations, clubcard appeals, customer collections, employee fundraising and goods donations from stores.
Tesco have raised £630,000 for the British Red Cross this year as part of the emergency response partnership which they formed with the charity in 2009. Since 2007 Tesco have raised over £4.6m for the charity and the Disaster Emergency Committee.
Josh Hardie, head of corporate responsibility at Tesco said, “We hope that this donation will support the relief efforts in the region and build on the large amount of emergency support work already being undertaken by our businesses in Thailand and Malaysia.”
