Macmillan in Starbucks deal for coffee morning fundraiser 1

Fundraising | Tania Mason | 12 Sep 2008

Macmillan Cancer Support has secured a deal with Starbucks that will see this year’s World’s Biggest Coffee Morning fundraiser taking place in Starbucks cafes across the country.

Now in its 17th year, the charity’s biggest fundraising event is aiming to raise a record £8.5m when it takes place on Friday 26 September.

As well as the usual coffee mornings taking place in people’s homes and workplaces, this year Starbucks cafes across the UK are also offering people the opportunity to host coffee mornings in their stores.

Macmillan supporters who want to use the cafes can simply contact their desired store and ask it to reserve a space for the expected number of people.

Starbucks is not putting up any cash, but its stores are displaying tankards and posters promoting the event to its customers.

The charity’s national events marketing manager Rebecca Guy said the charity hoped the Starbucks deal would help the event reach a new audience beyond its traditional supporter base. She did not expect the coffee chain’s sometimes controversial image to have any adverse effect on the fundraiser.

Last year the World’s Biggest Coffee Morning raised £7.6m and had 44,000 registrations, earning an average £220 per coffee morning. The charity has budgeted to spend £600,000 promoting it nationally.

Moto, Macmillan’s charity of the year partner, will also be offering in-store promotions on the day of the event, with percentages of certain products sold going to the charity.

It would be interesting to know how much of the £7.6 million qualified for Gift Aid. If only just 10% qualified, it would have meant an additional £212,800, not to mention all the additional donors.
