Brits will donate 7 per cent less to charity this year because of the credit crunch, according to a YouGov poll, meaning charities’ coffers will be down by £655m.
The research, commissioned by the Each One Counts campaign, found that the group most likely to reduce their levels of giving were those that gave £10 or less in 2007 – 20 per cent of donors who fell into this category said they would reduce the amount they gave to charity in 2008. Following closely behind were those who gave between £101 and £200 and £51 and £75 with 14.3 per cent and 11 per cent respectively saying they would reduce the amount they gave.
In total, some 21 per cent of respondents said that charitable donations would be one expense they would cut from their budget. On a positive note, charities fared much better than restaurants and clothing retailers - 53 per cent of respondents said they would stop eating out and 44 per cent said they’d stop buying clothes. Only 15 per cent said their expenditure would remain the same.
