DEC Pakistan Flood Appeal raises £19m

More than £19m has been raised for the flood crisis in Pakistan by the Disasters Emergency Committee appeal.

The announcement comes today as the DEC warns that one fifth of the country is now affected by the flooding and that the threat of water borne diseases has become severe.

The DEC has thanked donors, who have given an average of £60, but stressed the need for money to continue to come in.

Aside from individual donations, DEC has received cash from corporate donors and from small community fundraising initiatives. The Vodafone Foundation has released £74,000 for the appeal while Unilever has donated £164,000 in kind.

The English Cricket Team (captain Andrew Strauss pictured) has also made an effort, raising £4,000 from a crowd collection at their last test against the Pakistani team over August 6 – 8.

Today's total update comes as online campaigning organisation Avaaz.org launches a petition campaign to get governments to offer more state aid to the flood-stricken country.
