DEC Pakistan Flood Appeal total hits £15m

The Disasters Emergency Committee’s Pakistan Flood Appeal has now raised £15m as the Pakistani government issues estimates that the number of people affected by the crisis has topped 20 million.

The DEC, which raises funds for 13 different aid charities, this morning announced its new fundraising total, with £3m coming in over the weekend following Friday’s total of £12m.

The announcement comes after the BigGive.co.uk launched a £75,000-match fund offer for six different Pakistan emergency appeals, including that of the DEC.

Jon Brooks, managing director of the BigGive.co.uk, said that a mixture of corporate and private donors have offered the cash in order to stimulate more giving to Pakistan.

“The response hasn’t been as quick as it was for our Haiti appeal,” he told CivilSociety. With recent calls to action by the likes of UN Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon, Brooks said that the public is starting to respond, with around £20,000 donated via the BigGive.co.uk website over the weekend.

“It’s a bit of a slow burn in terms of fundraising,” he said. “But it seems like the public are hearing the calls.”
