A new group devoted to exploring the ethics, and most effective methods, of fundraising from children and young people was launched yesterday by the Institute of Fundraising.
Twenty fundraisers from a range of different charities gathered at the Pitcher and Piano in Holborn, London to mark the first meeting of the Special Interest Group.
“It is long overdue that a group focusing on this area was formed,” said Terence Lovell, operations manager for Barnardo’s Big Toddle.
At the inaugural gathering, which will be followed by quarterly meetings interspersed with informal and virtual meetings, the group decided upon the direction it will take into the future. In addition to developing a set of ethics for fundraising from young people, the group identified social networking, benchmarking, data capture and protection and education and fundraising as priorities.
The move to establish the SIG has come amidst a growing recognition of the value of younger donors. An American study released earlier this year found that people born since 1981 have the same rate of giving as those from other generations, after income and educational factors are taken into account. It also found that young people are willing and able to donate more, but are often under-asked.
Lovell expressed hope that the group would help charities work towards developing life-long relationships with donors.
“The initial contact that charities have with children and young people can help nurture donors for life and will have an impact on an individual’s perception of the organisation throughout their lifetime,” he said.
“It is essential we move forward collectively to address issues that are common across our organisations.”
