An application for donating money on social networking applications has raised $2.5m just one year after launching in America.
Causes, an application that works across both Facebook and MySpace, was launched by founders Joe Green and Sean Parker in May last year, to attempt to harness the power of viral campaigns for the
benefit of good causes.
The facility encourages social networking website users to engage with, and donate to, the causes and not-for-profit organisations about which they are passionate.
The application has garnered huge support; Causes reports that it has 12 million registered users and supports 1.5 million not-for-profit organisations. Money has been raised for just under 20,000 of them.
The facility has a loyal supporter base, with 60,000 Facebook users and 25,000 MySpace users tapping in to the application daily. The news from Causes comes as studies from the Chronicle of Philanthropy in the US reveal that larger American charities saw online donations rise by a median of 42 per cent over 2007.
