The Grosvenor House Art and Antiques Fair’s charity event has raised £1m for the British Red Cross.
Held on 12 June, the event featured a champagne reception and private viewing of the art and antiques fair, before dinner and an auction. The presentation of the Red Cross Services to Humanity Award was also made to Annie Lennox.
Lennox, who donated a performance to the event, was recognised for her work in raising awareness of the global HIV pandemic.
The event saw 28 guests pledge £1,000 – a figure then matched by one individual – bringing in a total of £56,000 for an appeal focussing on the crisis in Dafur, Sudan.
The auction was also a success with the opportunity to name a new hybrid rose fetching £13,000 and a three day trip to India for three couples raising £9,000.
“We are extremely grateful for the tremendous generosity of guests at the fair who donated an unsurpassed amount for an event like this,” said Sir Nick Young, chief executive of the Red Cross. “Every pound will help bring hope to the vulnerable people in crisis around the world and around the corner in the UK.”
The 2009 Grosvenor House Art and Antiques Fair Charity Gala will take place on 11 June in support of the National Osteoporosis Society.
