The Institute of Fundraising is launching a campaign to highlight the importance of cheques to charities following a proposal to phase out the payment form.
The Institute has also criticised the Payments Council for not consulting widely enough on the proposal to abolish cheques by 2018. The Institute will be arguing that many charities are reliant on income donated via cheque and have “real concerns” that abandoning cheques could result in some donors stopping giving altogether.
Director of policy and campaigns at the Institute, Louise Richards said that the move "has seemingly been designed entirely as a cost-cutting measure for the banks".
"We believe there has been scant consideration of the disastrous effect this could have on charitable income," she said.
The Institute is also encouraging its members to express their individual concern to the Payments Council.

Cheques are essential for our organisation.
We need to issue cheques to pay for bills every month.
The only alternative to the cheque is cash which cannot be sent safely through the post, also there is no record of payments made if cash instead of cheques is used. We use cheques to pay the hire of our hall, to pay for literature, to pay speakers. We are a small charity and there is no way we could use a card instead as most people we pay do not have a card machine.
We also need to be able to receive cheques from our members in payment of membership fees or donations.
To sum up we are no different from the private individual who wishes to send money through the post to a friend or relative, the recipient is not a "retail outlet" and so does not have a card machine.
