Two new matching services from The Big Give

The Big Give is launching two new matching services – one to marry up charities with prospective trustees and another to introduce art students to small charities that don’t have logos.

Big Give founder Sir Alec Reed told Civil Society that the organisation was perturbed to find that so many of the charities that applied for its recent match funding challenge didn’t even have a logo to upload to The Big Give website.

“We thought this was fantastic opportunity for students in art classes to choose any charity and design a logo for them,” he said.

So The Big Give is now “talking to a few organisations” about getting their design students involved and will launch the service in the new year.

In January The Big Give will also launch a new service to allow charities to receive CVs from people who are interested in becoming trustees.  Prospective trustees will be able to search for charities that have vacancies on their boards by location and cause, and The Big Give will ask its registered charities whether they wish to be sent appropriate CVs.

The Big Give’s recent match funding service raised £7.7m for 174 charities, with the Reed Foundation providing £1.5m of that.

But some charities told Civil Society they were unhappy at how many donors gave anonymously – some had up to 30 per cent of the money raised given by unnamed donors, meaning the charity could not follow up and try to convert them to regular givers.

Jon Brooks, managing director of The Big Give, said: “If donors want to give anonymously then we have to respect their wishes. The majority of donors did pass their details on to the charity, and we expect the charities to enjoy long relationships with these supporters, some of whom had never donated before.”

He added that The Big Give would be talking to all the charities who took part in this year’s challenge to identify where it can improve the scheme for next year, for both donors and charities.
